The College Board is committed to serving students with disabilities by providing services and reasonable accommodations appropriate to the student's disability and the purpose of the exam. Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) provides AP, PSAT/NMSQT and SAT testing accommodations for students who have documented disabilities and appropriate testing that has been completed within the last three years.
Here's how it works:
Application forms to take tests with accommodations may be obtained and filed through the Coordinator of Pupil Support Services, Ms. Jacqueline Browne, in Room 162. The form needs to be completed by the student, a parent or guardian and Ms. Browne. After the form is filed for the first time, the student may take the tests administered by The College Board without having to submit another SSD Student Eligibility form. The student gives the SSD code when registering for the test.
Accommodations for the ACT are granted through a separate process. Please see
Ms. Jacqueline Browne in Room 162 for details.
There are more than 100 scholarships available to BHS seniors. They range across the spectrum in terms of criteria and value. There are tuition scholarships to local universities like Boston University and Northeastern University, there are interest-based scholarships and activity based scholarships, and there are also scholarships with very few criteria other than graduating from the High School. The wide range of scholarships reflects the diverse nature of our students, of the students’ accomplishments, backgrounds and aspirations, and of the community itself.
The BHS Scholarship Committee, comprised of Guidance Counselors and led by a Chairperson, makes decisions about how to most equitably distribute the scholarship funds. The Committee uses an equation to objectively rank a Student’s scholarship application. Financial need, GPA and activities all count in the equation, but the Committee is most interested in helping students who don’t have their need met by family resources and college financial aid. To gather information on a family’s financial situation, the Committee requires each applicant to submit the CSS Profile financial aid form with the application, but of course the information is held in the strictest confidence within the Committee.
The application process begins in February with the distribution of applications for the Boston University and Northeastern University tuition scholarships. At BU the scholarship is a renewable four-year full tuition scholarship. At Northeastern the scholarship is a renewable five-year half tuition scholarship. The CSS Profile should be completed around February 1. Recipients are notified around the end of March.
As the BU and Northeastern decisions are being finalized, applications are made available for scholarships to any college. Since no other scholarships are so large that they should sway a student’s decision-making process, the Committee waits until after May 1 to consider other scholarship applications. At that time, applicants are asked to give the Committee a copy of acceptance and financial aid letters from the college they have chosen to attend. The Committee’s final deliberations are in mid-May and students are notified by mail in the days preceding graduation.
