Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD)

The College Board is committed to serving students with disabilities by providing services and reasonable accommodations appropriate to the student's disability and the purpose of the exam.  Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) provides AP, PSAT/NMSQT and SAT testing accommodations for students who have documented disabilities and appropriate testing that has been completed within the last three years.

Here's how it works:

  • Students and parents submit one SSD Student Eligibility Form for all three
  • College Board programs during the student's high school career (unless he/she transfers to another school).
  • SSD Student Eligibility Forms can be submitted early, preferably at the end of the student's freshman year or in the spring prior to the year in which the student takes the first test.
  • Eligibility letters for students approved to receive accommodations are sent to both students and SSD coordinators.
  • Students are assigned SSD codes to use when registering for the SAT. Students can register online at www.collegeboard.com.

Application forms to take tests with accommodations may be obtained and filed through the Coordinator of Pupil Support Services, Ms. Jacqueline Browne, in Room 162.  The form needs to be completed by the student, a parent or guardian and Ms. Browne.  After the form is filed for the first time, the student may take the tests administered by The College Board without having to submit another SSD Student Eligibility form.  The student gives the SSD code when registering for the test.

ACT PROGRAM

Accommodations for the ACT are granted through a separate process.  Please see
Ms. Jacqueline Browne in Room 162 for details. (download PDF)

There are more than 100 scholarships available to BHS seniors. They range across the spectrum in terms of criteria and value. There are tuition scholarships to local universities like Boston University and Northeastern University, there are interest-based scholarships and activity based scholarships, and there are also scholarships with very few criteria other than graduating from the High School. The wide range of scholarships reflects the diverse nature of our students, of the students’ accomplishments, backgrounds and aspirations, and of the community itself.
The BHS Scholarship Committee, comprised of Guidance Counselors and led by a Chairperson, makes decisions about how to most equitably distribute the scholarship funds. The Committee uses an equation to objectively rank a Student’s scholarship application. Financial need, GPA and activities all count in the equation, but the Committee is most interested in helping students who don’t have their need met by family resources and college financial aid. To gather information on a family’s financial situation, the Committee requires each applicant to submit the CSS Profile financial aid form with the application, but of course the information is held in the strictest confidence within the Committee.
The application process begins in February with the distribution of applications for the Boston University and Northeastern University tuition scholarships. At BU the scholarship is a renewable four-year full tuition scholarship. At Northeastern the scholarship is a renewable five-year half tuition scholarship. The CSS Profile should be completed around February 1. Recipients are notified around the end of March.
As the BU and Northeastern decisions are being finalized, applications are made available for scholarships to any college. Since no other scholarships are so large that they should sway a student’s decision-making process, the Committee waits until after May 1 to consider other scholarship applications. At that time, applicants are asked to give the Committee a copy of acceptance and financial aid letters from the college they have chosen to attend. The Committee’s final deliberations are in mid-May and students are notified by mail in the days preceding graduation.

BATV will cover various home games this fall season for presentation on their station (channel 3 on Comcast and RCN).

There are many opportunities for parents to be involved:

    • We need parents for each sport to act as point of contact for communications.
    • We need parents to form a committee to organize and evaluate banners in the gyms.
    • We need students and parents to act as team photographers/videographers to provide photos and clips to post on the athletics website and Facebook.
    • We need students and parents to act as broadcasters to do color/play-by-play for filmed events.
    • We need parents to help rehab the trophy cases in front of Schluntz gym.

If you are interested in volunteering, let us know.  Even if you only have an hour to donate, we could use your help!

In the meantime, please contact either Helen Zak at helen.zak@gmail.com or Jacque Francona at jacfrancona@aol.com with any suggestions or ideas for the coming year.

Friends of Performing Arts (FoPA)Friends of Performing Arts (FoPA) is a volunteer parent group dedicated to supporting BHS’s rich array of performing arts activities. Our goal is to ensure that dance, drama, music and stagecraft remain a vital component of our children’s education.

The committee meets only four times a year, and activities range from ushering and selling tickets/refreshments at performances to building awareness of BHS’ arts offerings and advocating for sustained public funding for the arts in Brookline. Our first meeting for 2010-11 is planned for October 25th at 7:00 p.m. in the BHS staff lounge next to the MLK Room.

Please join us in keeping BHS a community that supports the vibrant spirit of creative expression through the performing arts. For more information or to volunteer to be a part of this lively group, contact Karen Campbell at 617.739.0873 or karen_campbell@brookline.k12.ma.us.
