The Brookline High School Parent Teacher Organization is committed to supporting important communications between school and home. It sponsors a variety of events each year designed to show support of the school and to keep parents informed about how to help their children make the most of the BHS experience.
PTO-sponsored home/school communications include:
- the newsletter News & Views
- the BHS student/community telephone directory *
- email communications
- monthly parent meetings
The PTO also funds a number of enrichment initiatives every year, such as:
- a barbecue for entering freshmen
- a college essay workshop for BHS seniors
- educational grants/special projects proposed by teachers and staff
- Conversazione (an evening of give and take with a local or national notable)
Opportunities for parent participation include providing financial support, participating on committees, being a class parent, helping with News & Views, attending monthly class meetings, working at a PTO-sponsored event, donating food to a teacher/staff appreciation event, running for school council, joining the After the Prom Party team, tutoring a student, speaking at a parent meeting and/or sharing your expertise with students.

Annual College Essay Workshop for Seniors
Saturday, September 25, 8:30 a.m.
Seniors and parent volunteers can sign up for the Workshop at http://2010collegeworkshop.eventbrite.com
Whether your child has done advance work on the personal essay required for most college applications or hasn't given the essay a thought, this free workshop will be helpful. It's designed to move students to the next step: get started, re-evaluate an idea, make an editorial leap, or add the final touches to a compelling personal statement.
This workshop is offered every September by the PTO, led by the dedicated BHS English faculty and supported by parent volunteers. Students are grouped with others at a similar stage of writing, and get individual attention and feedback. In the past four years, nearly 1,000 seniors have found this workshop effective in getting them going, giving them confidence, and helping them finish up the process.
The College Essay Workshop, sponsored by the PTO, depends on parent volunteers! Please sign up to help students with their writing or to provide logistical support. This is a one-day, one-time commitment. If you're working with the students, you'll get an orientation on helping students with their writing.

BATV will cover various home games this fall season for presentation on their station (channel 3 on Comcast and RCN).
There are many opportunities for parents to be involved:
- We need parents for each sport to act as point of contact for communications.
- We need parents to form a committee to organize and evaluate banners in the gyms.
- We need students and parents to act as team photographers/videographers to provide photos and clips to post on the athletics website and Facebook.
- We need students and parents to act as broadcasters to do color/play-by-play for filmed events.
- We need parents to help rehab the trophy cases in front of Schluntz gym.
If you are interested in volunteering, let us know. Even if you only have an hour to donate, we could use your help!
In the meantime, please contact either Helen Zak at helen.zak@gmail.com or Jacque Francona at jacfrancona@aol.com with any suggestions or ideas for the coming year.
Friends of Performing Arts
Friends of Performing Arts (FoPA) is a volunteer parent group dedicated to supporting BHS’s rich array of performing arts activities. Our goal is to ensure that dance, drama, music and stagecraft remain a vital component of our children’s education.
The committee meets only four times a year, and activities range from ushering and selling tickets/refreshments at performances to building awareness of BHS’ arts offerings and advocating for sustained public funding for the arts in Brookline. Our first meeting for 2010-11 is planned for October 25th at 7:00 p.m. in the BHS staff lounge next to the MLK Room.
Please join us in keeping BHS a community that supports the vibrant spirit of creative expression through the performing arts. For more information or to volunteer to be a part of this lively group, contact Karen Campbell at 617.739.0873 or karen_campbell@brookline.k12.ma.us. And be sure to visit the FoPA website at http://fopa.weebly.com/.
